On September 30th, Inova broke ground on the sites of its two new, state-of-the-art hospitals—Inova Alexandria and Inova Franconia-Springfield—marking a significant milestone in expanding access and transforming the healthcare experience in Northern Virginia. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place at each location with local officials, healthcare leaders, and community members in attendance. The two new hospitals will replace the existing Inova Alexandria Hospital.

“The replacement of Inova Alexandria Hospital on these two sites continues Inova’s legacy of providing exceptional healthcare to Alexandria and the broader region, a tradition that has spanned more than 150 years,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO of Inova. “Inova’s commitment to providing greater access to world-class care runs deep, as we invest billions back into the community to enhance healthcare services and ensure that our neighbors have access to the care they need for generations to come.”

The replacement of the current Inova Alexandria Hospital, which opened on Seminary Road in 1962, has been a priority for Inova and the residents of Alexandria. Given the hospital’s historic role and deep connection to Alexandria and the surrounding communities, the replacement plan was undertaken with great care and deliberation. After careful analysis, Inova determined the most effective approach to serve the Eastern Region of the state—comprised of the City of Alexandria and southern Fairfax County—was through three interconnected projects:

  • New Inova Alexandria Campus: In addition to a state-of-the-art hospital, this campus will include a cancer center and an outpatient services facility.
  • Expanded Franconia-Springfield Campus: Complementing the existing emergency and outpatient services of the adjacent Inova Franconia-Springfield Health Center, the new hospital will offer inpatient care and a center for specialized orthopedic care.
  • New Inova Health Center – Oakville: Opening in November 2024, this facility located near Potomac Yard and National Landing, brings new healthcare services to the community and includes an emergency room, outpatient services, ambulatory surgery center, and physician offices.

The new Inova Alexandria Campus will anchor the redevelopment of the former Landmark Mall site, providing the same world-class Inova care Alexandrians currently enjoy. Designed to serve the needs of the community for decades to come, the new facility will have 192 beds in fully private rooms and offer expanded services including advanced cardiac and neurosciences care, comprehensive women’s health services, and specialized cancer care, all within a modern, patient-centered campus.

“Inova’s re-investment in the City of Alexandria is both substantial and transformative,” said City of Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. “These projects will spur redevelopment and economic growth opportunities in the West End for the first time in decades. Alongside the world-class healthcare care for our residents, it’s truly a win on multiple fronts.”

The new Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus will bring inpatient care to the community, offering residents of Fairfax County and beyond ready access to a broader range of top-tier healthcare services. This 110-bed facility will be equipped with advanced emergency care, surgical services, and specialized inpatient care, along with a focus on community health and wellness. The location is ideal for expanding local access to care for patients across the region, while also providing seamless connections to Inova’s broader network of services.

“The Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus will ensure more families in our community have access to high-quality, compassionate care closer to home,” said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay. “These projects highlight Inova’s commitment to partnering with local governments to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve health outcomes for all of our residents.”

“These new facilities represent a new physical identity that reflects Inova’s commitment to clinical excellence and compassionate care,” said Rina Bansal, MD, President, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “These buildings will seamlessly blend beauty with functionality, creating spaces that enhance the experience for our patients, visitors, and team members alike.”

Both campuses were designed by Ballinger and Ennead Architects and Clark Construction (Inova Alexandria) and DPR Construction (Inova Franconia-Springfield) will lead the construction efforts, with completion expected in 2028.

The groundbreakings come just weeks before Inova is slated to open the new Inova Health Center at Oakville. For more information on Inova’s eastern region development plans, visit https://www.inova.org/easternregion.
