Learning while Leading: Piloting Inova’s Eastern Region Development Plan

In 2024, Inova opened the Inova Health Center – Oakville in Alexandria, VA, and broke ground on two hospitals—Inova Alexandria and Inova Franconia-Springfield. The buildings are part of Inova’s ambitious Eastern Region Development Plan, designed to establish a new identity, operational standard, and patient experience across the health system. Undertaking multiple projects simultaneously allowed Inova and the design team an unprecedented opportunity for system-wide consistency.
Ballinger Associate Principal Carl Heyne, AIA, LEED AP BD+C will present the design process alongside Inova’s Heather Russell, RN, MSHA, Vice President, Eastern Region Development, at the upcoming Healthcare Facilities Symposium in San Diego, CA. Their conference talk, “Learning while Leading: Piloting Inova’s Eastern Region Development Plan,” will overview lessons learned on the first building to open and how they were rapidly incorporated into ongoing projects, highlighting Inova’s system-wide approach and commitment to continuous improvement. The session will take place Friday, September 26 at the San Diego Convention Center.
The annual Healthcare Facilities Symposium tackles the most pressing issues shaping the future of healthcare environments. Real-world case studies will showcase collaborative construction strategies and cutting-edge approaches to a range of healthcare facility priorities.
