A Healing Environment Inspired by the Great Plains

Bryan Health
Kearney Cancer Center

In the heart of central Nebraska, access to cancer care once meant hours on the road, adding to the emotional and physical strain on patients and their families. The Kearney Cancer Center was conceived to change that reality.  The site was developed by property owner Goldenrod Companies, and represents a partnership between Kearney Regional Medical Center and Cancer Partners of Nebraska to bring convenient, integrated cancer care closer to communities.

Like its predecessor in the region, the April Samson Cancer Center, the building is both a response to Nebraska’s stretches of prairie grassland, and an extension of it. The architectural language is calm and elemental: horizontal rooflines, locally sourced limestone, FSC-certified wood, and abundant daylight form a palette that is both regional and restorative.

Inside, a clear north-south spine organizes the building, reinforcing intuitive wayfinding and a carefully choreographed patient experience. Patients are surrounded by natural light and framed views of the outdoors. The infusion suite, strategically positioned to overlook nearby Yanney Park, serves as a contemplative retreat, where artwork and shifting daylight contribute to a healing environment. Even radiation oncologymodality often relegated to subterranean levelsis located on the building perimeter with windows and skylights. These design decisions support tranquility and resilience for patients as well as care teams.

Ballinger’s architects and engineers collaborated closely to prioritize occupant comfort and dignity while meeting the client’s goal of speed to market. The design team conducted thorough solar analyses to guide the roof overhang and skylight sizing. Thermal comfort was a design driver: the layout ensures patients can view the outdoor environment without sitting in direct sunlight.

Designed to inspire serenity, the Kearney Cancer Center delivers not only cancer care but also a sense of dignity and belonging that make healing more accessible for the communities it serves.

"Healing occurs best in the community, not on the interstate or highway, driving from appointment to appointment."

Mark Stavas, MD Radiation Oncologist, Cancer Partners of Nebraska
