The Tun Legacy Foundation
preserving and reviving Philadelphia’s history
The Tun Legacy Foundation
The Tun
Once frequented by Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, the Tun holds a unique place in Philadelphia and America’s history. It was the founding place of several organizations integral to the construction of American’s institutions and freedoms including the United States Marine Corps, the Pennsylvania Freemasons, St. Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia, the Society of St. George, and the Friendly Sons & Daughters of St. Patrick. Since it was razed 1781, there have been several attempts to reconstruct the tavern and reignite its place in Philadelphia’s history. In 2025, nearly 240 years after the last patrons took their seats, The Tun will give members of these storied organizations a space to remember their shared history while enjoying the comforts of a modern hospitality experience.
key information
Ballinger was selected by the Tun Legacy Foundation to rebuild the tavern, honoring the architecture, materials, and layout as it existed in the 1770s. The Foundation’s goal is to re-establish The Tun as a functioning mariner’s tavern and offer a destination for the millions of Americans connected to organizations founded within the tavern’s walls.
Located in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood, this three-story waterfront facility will include the hallmark of the project – a replica of the original Tun – a full restaurant and kitchen (Peg Mullan’s Beefsteak House), private dining and event areas, chef’s kitchen dining area, raw bar, space for outdoor dining and events, and educational exhibits. The original Tun only stood for approximately 100 years, and building design has rapidly advanced over the last 240. Informed by extensive archival research, Ballinger is providing architectural, interior, and engineering design services to recapture the spirit of the original space. The design features maritime industry materials reminiscent of colonial Philadelphia including a slate roof, exposed wood, steel and brick, and period finishes alongside modern technologies such as a steel and concrete frame, high-performance windows, and modern mechanical, plumbing, electrical and security/IT infrastructure. Most importantly, every component of the building design is being carefully considered to reference the tavern’s original time period.
